Primary Blog/Controllable Impact Throws

Often when I use the terms “throw” or “takedown” while teaching a seminar, attendees tend to think right away about high impact, high velocity Judo or Wrestling style takedowns.

We must remember that the overall strategy of Jiu-jitsu is unique both in the scoring system of the sport and the approach to self-defense.

The focus isn’t on the amplitude of the throw, but rather on what happens after the throw.

For BJJ low-risk/high-reward takedowns are better suited, but let’s dig deeper and talk about “controllable impact” takedowns.

Spectrum of Intensity

The essence of controllable impact throws lies in the Tori’s ability to dictate the force and speed of the throw.

Whether in a cooperative practice session or competition, the controllable aspect ensures that the descent and landing are well within the control of the person executing the takedown.

This strategic approach allows for a spectrum of intensity, from slow and gentle to forceful and impactful, depending on the context.

Guiding the Breakfall

A crucial element in controllable impact throws is Tori’s role in guiding Uke through a breakfall.

By controlling the pulling arm and manipulating the descent, the Tori actively shapes and guides their Uke's breakfall.

This nuanced control not only enhances the safety of the landing but also fosters a collaborative training environment where both participants can trust in the process.

Reverse Engineering

The concept of reverse engineering comes into play when refining takedowns for efficiency and safety.

By considering the perspective of guiding your partner through a breakfall, practitioners gain a fresh outlook on their techniques.

This shift in perspective encourages a focus on precision and control, leading to takedowns that are not only effective but also cleaner and safer.

The art of controllable impact throws is rooted in Tori's ability to navigate the spectrum of force—from controlled practice to competitive scenarios and self-defense situations.

By actively guiding partners through breakfalls and embracing the concept of reverse engineering, grapplers can elevate their takedown game with techniques that are not only impactful but also prioritize the safety and well-being of all involved.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.
