Primary Blog/Don’t Force Your Takedowns

In the pursuit of mastering the art of Jiu-jitsu, the importance of proper technique cannot be overstated, especially when it comes to the often-misunderstood subject of takedowns.

One prevalent misconception is that injuries predominantly occur during takedown attempts.

However, the truth lies in the execution.

When takedowns lead to injuries, it's often a result of forcing the technique rather than executing it with finesse.

The same principle applies to ground grappling—how many of us have found ourselves hurt during a roll?

It's not the act of grappling itself but the attempt to force a technique that leads to injuries.

In Jiu-jitsu, simplicity is key.

As I always tell my students, "Jiu-jitsu is the gentle art. It's only hard in two cases. The first case is when you're doing it wrong, and the second is when your opponent is doing it better than you are.”

The rest of the time, Jiu-jitsu is meant to feel easy.

If it doesn't, it's a signal that something needs correction.

Wisdom emphasizes the importance of listening to your body and paying attention to the feel of the technique.

Just as with ground techniques, takedowns should feel smooth and effortless.

If something feels off, it's a cue to reassess and refine your approach.

Whether you're a seasoned practitioner or a novice on the mats, prioritizing proper execution over forceful attempts not only enhances your Jiu-jitsu journey but also significantly reduces the risk of injuries.

Embrace the philosophy of easy Jiu-jitsu.

Let's focus on refining our techniques, ensuring they feel effortless, and creating an environment on the tatami where safety and skill development go hand in hand.

After all, the true beauty of Jiu-jitsu lies in the seamless execution of technique, making it a graceful and effective martial art for practitioners of all levels.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

See you on the flipside. - Larry Keith
