Primary Blog/Efficient Takedowns for Jiu-Jitsu: Mastering the Art of Control and Safety

In Jiu-Jitsu, the emphasis should always be on efficiency and control.

Unlike Judo, Wrestling, or Sambo, where throws are judged by their amplitude, velocity, and impact, Jiu-Jitsu rewards points based on the control you demonstrate after a takedown.

This difference is crucial, especially for practitioners over 40 who prioritize safety and longevity.

To master efficient takedowns, think "down" instead of "up."

High-amplitude throws might look impressive, but they often require more energy and carry a higher risk of injury.

Instead, focus on low-risk, controllable techniques like Ko-uchi-gari, De-ashi-barai, and O-soto-gari.

These techniques allow you to bring your opponent to the ground with minimal effort while maintaining the control needed to secure points.

By prioritizing controllable impact, you not only reduce the risk of injury but also conserve energy for the ground game.

Remember, in Jiu-Jitsu, it's not about how hard you can throw your opponent but how effectively you can control them once they hit the mat.

This approach ensures that you can train longer, compete smarter, and enjoy the art of Jiu-Jitsu well into your later years.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

See you on the flipside. - Larry Keith
