Primary Blog/Finding the “Dead Angle” for Your Takedowns

I first heard the term “dead angle” in the mid-1990s from my friend and Jiu-jitsu mentor, Tim Cartmell.

He also wrote about it in his book, “Effortless Combat Throws,” which I highly recommend you add to your martial arts library.

As a Judoka, I understood the concept of Kuzushi, but had never really considered the nuances of structure and base.

The Essence of the Dead Angle

The “ankle line” is the straight line that runs from ankle to ankle no matter what stance we take.

The “dead angle” is the line perpendicular to the "ankle line."

This is the line that is the opponent's weakest structure when it comes to defending or countering throws.

To achieve effortless takedowns, your task is to seek out and exploit this vulnerable space.

As you maneuver into position, focus on aligning your attack with the opponent's dead angle.

Eight Directions, Eight Pathways to Effortless Takedowns

In the principle of Kuzushi (off balancing), there exist eight directions—eight pathways to disrupt the opponent's equilibrium effortlessly.

Connect the principles of Kuzushi with the dead angle, and each direction becomes an entry to unforced takedowns.

By strategically aligning your attack with the opponent's weakest defense, the execution of kuzushi paves the way for effortless takedowns.

Cultivating Intuition and Timing

Effortless takedowns stem from an understanding of the opponent's movements, coupled with timing.

Cultivate an intuitive sense for when the dead angle opens up and let your takedowns flow effortlessly.

The synergy between intuition, timing, and the principles of dead angle within kuzushi transforms your approach from forced to fluid.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

See you on the flipside. - Larry Keith
