In Jiu-Jitsu, smart takedowns prioritize safety and efficiency over flashy, high-amplitude throws.
This is especially important for older grapplers who need to protect their bodies from unnecessary strain and injury.
By focusing on techniques that align with Jiu-Jitsu's unique rules and objectives, you can achieve effective results without compromising your well-being.
Techniques like Ko-uchi-gari and O-soto-gari are excellent examples of smart takedowns
These moves are low-risk, keeping you in a safe position while allowing you to control your opponent.
By practicing these takedowns through uchi-komi and nage-komi drills, you develop the precision and timing needed to execute them efficiently.
Remember, the goal in Jiu-Jitsu is to control your opponent for three seconds post-takedown to score points.
This focus on control over impact means that smooth transitions to ground positions are more valuable than dramatic throws.
By prioritizing these smart takedowns, you can ensure a safer and more effective grappling game that supports long-term practice and enjoyment.
And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

At my dojo, we practice takedowns every day, safely and efficiently.
I want to share my methods with any other grapplers that wish to learn effective takedowns, but don’t know where to start.
