Primary Blog/Staying Safe on the Mats: Takedown Techniques for Longevity in Jiu-Jitsu

For grapplers over 40, staying safe on the mats is paramount.

Because we train in a combat sport, any technique can be a source of injury if not executed properly.

But, with the right techniques and strategies, you can minimize risk and maximize efficiency.

When it comes to takedowns, focus on the ones that don't expose your back or neck, such as Ko-uchi-gari and Kibisu-gaeshi.

These moves allow you to maintain control and transition smoothly into ground positions.

Drilling these techniques repetitively and incorporating live flow rolling helps develop the muscle memory and timing needed for safe execution.

By expanding your repertoire to include a variety of low-risk, high-reward takedowns, you reduce the likelihood of forcing techniques and increase your options on the mat.

This approach ensures that you can continue to enjoy Jiu-Jitsu with reduced risk and enhanced longevity.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

See you on the flipside. - Larry Keith
