In my 2021 Takedown Confidence Summit, Sambo expert and BJJ Black Belt, Reilly Bodycomb and I discussed aligning your grips, stance, and takedowns with your preferred guard passing side as well as using these components to prevent or delay the opponent’s guard pull.
This is a practical concept but requires a bit of reverse engineering.
Most of us have a preferred side when passing the guard.
Most of my passes tend to be towards the right with several left-sided entries in my toolkit.
But the real trick lies in syncing up your takedown stance with your dominant guard passing side.
Consider this scenario: if you're used to right-sided guard passes but find yourself in a stance better suited for a left-handed takedown, you're setting yourself up for a potential hiccup.
The misalignment might slow down your follow-through, impacting the effectiveness of your takedowns.
It boils down to a conscious choice.
If you excel at passing on your opponent's right side, it's essential to arrange your takedowns so that they naturally propel you in that direction.
This tactical alignment not only improves the precision and speed of your takedowns but also sets the stage for a smoother transition into your preferred guard passing techniques.
Becoming a complete grappler is about paying attention to the details.
Simple adjustments in your stance can make a significant difference in seamlessly integrating your takedowns with your guard passing game.
Take a moment to evaluate your preferences, make the necessary tweaks, and witness how strategic stance alignment can be a game-changer in your quest for grappling excellence.
And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.
