Primary Blog/Takedown Strategies for the 40+ Grappler: Balancing Technique and Longevity

As a grappler over 40, balancing technique and longevity becomes essential.

The body doesn't recover as quickly as it once did, making injury prevention a top priority.

Any technique in Jiu-jitsu, when done incorrectly or forced, can be a source of injuries.

However, just like your ground game, with the right strategies, you can execute effective takedowns while minimizing risk.

First, focus on techniques that don't expose your back or neck to your opponent.

Throws like Ko-uchi-gari and Kibisu-gaeshi keep you facing your opponent, reducing the risk of counter-attacks.

Incorporating drills like uchi-komi and nage-komi helps develop the muscle memory and timing needed for safe and effective takedowns.

Additionally, learning a variety of takedowns tailored to different stances and postures ensures you're prepared for any situation.

This variety allows you to select the most efficient technique for the given scenario, reducing the need to force a throw and risking injury.

By adopting these strategies, you can continue to enjoy Jiu-Jitsu with reduced risk and enhanced longevity.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

See you on the flipside. - Larry Keith
