In modern Jiu-jitsu, we view the guard as a barrier to be overcome, a challenge to navigate to gain control over our opponent's upper body.
However, the landscape changes when we shift our perspective to Sambo.
In Sambo, the legs are not an obstacle, but an opportunity.
Leglocks have become rather mainstream in today’s Jiu-jitsu.
However, take note that most leg attacks tend to be done from bottom guard position.
This is mainly due to lack of takedowns and overuse of guard pulling.
Leglocks have always been part of Sambo, right along with takedowns.
If we use our takedown skills and focus on flowing follow-up attacks in Jiu-jitsu, we can still fall into allure of fighting to pass the guard.
I propose that rather than seeing the guard as an obstacle, we should look at it as an opportunity.
Instead of the legs being something that must be overcome, the legs can become an avenue for attack.
Unlike the bottom-centric approach seen in contemporary Jiu-jitsu, Sambo leg locks flow naturally from top position, seamlessly blending with the art's emphasis on takedowns.
Understanding this paradigm shift is crucial.
By merging our takedown arsenal with top control leg locks, we expand our offensive toolkit, creating a complex approach that keeps our opponents guessing.
By having this mindset, we elevate our game, become more complete grapplers, and unlock new avenues for domination on the mats.
And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

I have been teaching takedowns for over 30 years.
I have students ranging in age from 4 to 84.
At my dojo, we practice takedowns every day, safely and efficiently.
I want to share my methods with any other grapplers that wish to learn effective takedowns, but don’t know where to start.
