Primary Blog/Unleashing Your Tokui Waza: Elevating BJJ Takedowns with Judo Mastery

The Judo concept of "Tokui-waza" holds a valuable key to unlocking success in Jiu-jitsu takedowns.

Translated as “favorite” or “best technique”, Tokui-waza is not just a term; it's a strategic approach that can significantly benefit your BJJ takedown game.

Just as in Judo, identifying and mastering your go-to takedown technique in BJJ provides a strategic advantage, allowing you to play to your strengths and catch your opponent off guard.

One significant difference is that in Judo a person’s tokui-waza might be one of high amplitude to assure scoring the ippon, whereas in Jiu-jitsu, ground control is paramount, so choosing low-risk/high-reward takedowns is more applicable to the ruleset.

When teaching takedowns for BJJ, I often spotlight practical techniques with minimal risk, such as Ko-uchi-gari (minor inner reap) and Kibisu-gaeshi (ankle pick).

These low-risk takedowns not only align with the principles of Tokui-waza by emphasizing your favorite techniques but also cater to the unique dynamics of BJJ.

In a sport where minimizing exposure to submissions and maintaining positional control are crucial, opting for takedowns that offer a solid balance between effectiveness and safety is a wise choice.

The mastery of Tokui-waza is a cornerstone of success, integrating this concept into your BJJ practice can elevate your takedown game to new heights.

Take the time to identify your strengths, hone your favorite techniques, and watch as your "Tokui-waza" becomes a powerful asset in your journey to becoming a complete grappler.

And remember, when you learn one technique you know one technique.
When you learn a concept you know a thousand techniques.

See you on the flipside. - Larry Keith
